What is GREEN BAY?
a scheme for the environmental transition of passenger ports
The GREEN BAY certification is a scheme designed to support the environmental transition of European passenger ports. It comes at a time when environmental challenges and human pressure are increasingly alarming, leaving port areas and ecosystems vulnerable.

The programme’s presentation video: the challenge facing passenger ports, the 25 criteria, and what certification brings to your port.
Video transcript
Today, a passenger port faces a twofold challenge: welcoming travellers while reducing its footprint on its territory.
The impact of a passenger terminal on its urban and natural environment is significant. And for you, managing the social pressure of local residents, of the media, of strict regulation, is a matter of the first importance.
That feeling of omnipresence has to be reduced, turning what looks like a nuisance into an asset: an invitation to travel, as ports have always been.
With you, we have created the future GREEN BAY reference framework to structure your environmental strategy. The strengths of this independent certification: fewer nuisances, anticipation of regulations, better media reach.
The certification process is structured around 25 measurable criteria, adapted to your port. Pollution is a major chapter. It covers: waste, its reduction and its management, air, through the emissions of ships and equipment, noise, from the whole of port activity.
Respecting local residents also means protecting the biodiversity around them, by greening the spaces, by acting against invasive species, by fighting light pollution.
The GREEN BAY criteria also mobilise people. Training staff in these issues is taken into account, as well as feedback from users and port operators, to continuously improve your services.
This progress takes shape in an annual review with your own monitoring indicators, to aim for new horizons.
Contact us to take hold of this innovative scheme and bring your port into a new phase of its development.
Born of a simple observation
GREEN BAY was born of a simple observation: there is currently no common environmental reference framework suited to the specific features of passenger ports.
The certification provides a solid framework allowing ports to measure, steer and improve their environmental performance.

The AFNOR SPEC 2407 reference framework
Reference framework
An environmental reference framework entirely dedicated to terminals welcoming passengers (ferries, cruises…), formalised as an AFNOR specification: AFNOR SPEC 2407.
Access
Freely available online.
European scope
A CWA 18366 publication based on AFNOR SPEC 2407 extends the reference framework to the European scale, with the aim of covering European passenger terminals.
Certification issued by AFNOR Certification · 3-year cycle

A European project
GREEN BAY was created within a European project co-financed by the Interreg Italy-France Maritime 2021-2027 programme.
Led by Ports Rade Toulon – La Seyne, together with several French and Italian partners, the project aims to harmonise the environmental practices of passenger terminals and to spread a common reference framework supporting the ecological transition of European ports.
